Originating in Cornwall Ontario, Fathom Ties was initially created by Nathan Gignac (guitar), Dan Gadbois (drums), Matt Vachon (guitar) and Cory Smith (bass). With Metalcore groups such as Killswitch Engage and All That Remains, as their main source of influence, they tailored an aggressive, yet melodic sound. After a few months their bassist decided to pursue other venues and the band was left short. Moreover, they were still without a singer. They endeavoured to make a small four-track demo with local recording engineer, Roy Nickol in hopes that it would help them engage more potential fans and complete the band by finding a suitable singer. Many auditions were held.
It was not until the three members moved to Kingston to pursue an education in music at St. Lawrence in the Digital Arts for Musicians program, that they met Justin “Hal” Cote from Casting Fedora who eventually became their bassist. After a few months of collaborating with the latest member of the band, Fathom Ties began to develop a fresher and more signature sound. They finally met Jamie Maracle, singer of Belleville sensation Cold Blood Ed, at the end of their first school year in 2007. Through the summer of 2007, Fathom Ties rehearsed in Cornwall to prepare for shows in the fall. They played their first show on August 31, 2007 in Kingston, Ontario. It was on that night that they knew they had something special and would pursue their music to greater heights.
During the year of 2008, they produced a three-track demo, played over 30 shows in Cornwall, Kingston, Belleville, Ottawa, Toronto, and Williamsburg, where they shared the stage with The Reason, Threat Signal, Dead and Divine, The Holly Springs Disaster, Straight Reads the Line, Johnny Truant, MEANS, and other up and coming bands. Aside from developing a strong live show, Fathom Ties also went into “DreamBuilderStudio” to record an EP or short album with above-mentioned recording engineer, Roy Nickol.
In 2009, Fathom Ties will undertake to go on tour, play more shows and hopefully gather more friends and fans! Fuelled by a passion for making aggressive and high energy music, Fathom Ties strives to conquer any impediment in their midst. The sky is the limit for this metalcore band from Eastern Ontario.
